Reality vs. Denial

Have you ever seen or heard something that makes you realize how old you really are? My husband and mother-in-law would be spinning in their graves if they knew what I'm about to reveal. My age. I'm 70 but feel about half that.

Today on the radio I heard an interview with Christopher Cox who is Richard Nixon's grandson and is running for congress from Suffolk County on Long Island, NY. How can that be? He has to be at least 25 years old. I can still picture his mother as a child when Nixon was Eisenhower's Vice President. Could I really be old enough to remember when Tricia Nixon married his father?

I'm also forced into reality when I see Gidget (AKA Sally Field) talking about osteoporosus. How did these people get so old while I stayed so young (at least in my mind). Can you believe Racquel Welch is 69? Margaret O'Brien, my favorite child star is 72. Dean Stockwell, another favorite child star is is 74. Even Robert Redford is 71.

How did they get so old when I didn't. I think the answer is denial. "Old" always has been and will continue to be at least 20 years older than I. I'm still middle-aged (at least in my mind). So what if I remember events from the '40's.

Today I travelled to Queens to get my hair done. I make the trip because, when you find a hairdresser you like, you stay with her.

She works one day a week at a nursing home taking care the resident's hair. She had mentioned that there is a certain freedom to say whatever is on your mind when you reach a certain age. That reminded me of the time when my friend Grace turned 80. She had a party at Milleridge Inn on Long Island where we had a delicious meal. After dessert and when we were ready to leave, she called the waiter (a goodlooking young man) over to the table. Grace was a very proper lady, but this day, she told the waiter her age, said it was her birthday and then asked him for a kiss. This shocked everyone and made the waiter blush. Grace later said that she would never have done such a thing 40 years ago. She did get the kiss.

You can get away with so much when you're older.

Too Old?

I recently saw an editorial in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL that asked if John McCain is too old to be president. This editorial listed the world leaders who assumed leadership of their countries when they were 60+.

Remember Winston Churchill? He was 65 when he was prime minister during the war, and when he took office again in 1951 he was 76. Konrad Adenauer became the first chancellor of West Germany when he was 73. He led his country back from the destruction of WWII. Golda Meir was 70 when she became prime minister of Israel. She addressed Palestinian terrorism and presided over Israel's victory in the Yom Kippur War. After being imprisoned for 27 years, Nelson Mandela became the first democfatically elected president of South Africa. He was 75 and his was a presidency where his nation went from apartheid to integrated democratic rule.

There was a time when I thought John McCain was too old to be president. I changed my mind when I saw that he brought his mother to one of his campaign stops. She's 96.
